The MeasureJ2X program requires MRJ (Apple's JVM - Java Virtual Machine) to be installed on your computer in order to run:
- MRJ 2.2.5 is recommended
- MRJ must be at least MRJ 2.1.4 and no greater than MRJ 2.2.5
The above MRJ's run on the Mac OS Classic environment. By default, the Mac OS X provides a Java 2 environment, which is not compatible with MeasureJ2X at this time. The next release of MeasureJ2X will run on Java 2 and be able to run on the default Mac OS X Java environment.
MRJ is developed and distributed by Apple Computer, Inc. and may be already present on your computer. You may skip the installation step for installing MRJ (Sec 3.3.2 Part 1 of the Installation Guide) if it is already present and is a version that meets the above requirements.
To determine if it is installed already, do a search for MRJ
on your computer. If it is installed you will find a
file with a name like "About MRJ 2.2.4" which will live
in a folder named 'Mac OS Runtime for Java'. The name of
the About file (or its contents) will indicated what version of
MRJ is installed on your computer.
Apple has released numerous versions of MRJ since the initial release of MeasureJ2X in August, 1999 and continues to do so. It is difficult for us to keep abreast of each version released, so this README file seeks to tell you what MeasureJ2X requirements are and leaves it up to you to determine whether what you are downloading from Apple meets the requirements for MeasureJ2X and will run on your machine.
Each MRJ release has upped memory requirements so please review the MRJ requirements and About files and adhere to their guidelines in terms of required memory and settings for virtual memory.
As of 10/2001 this is the recommended level of MRJ. This is the best performing MRJ and most bug free release to date.
Apple lists the requirements to run as "PowerPC, MacOS 8.1 or later, 64MB memory (RAM) is highly recommended". It is our experience that anything less than 64 MB memory (RAM) will more than likely not be enough, so we highly recommend 64MB or more. Please also check Apple's documentation yourself and make sure you adhere to the requirements for virtual memory settings.
This is the level of MRJ currently distributed with
MeasureJ2X. It can be downloaded directly from the ProjectJ2X Web
Site at:
http://www.voortech.com/projectj2x/release/
Or, as of 10/2001 directly from Apple's web site at:
http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html
This was the recommended level of MRJ prior to the release of MRJ V2.5.5. If your memory is too limited to run MRJ V2.2.5, this your next best choice.
Apple lists the requirements to run as "PowerPC, MacOS 8.1 or later, minimum 40 MB RAM". It is our experience that 40MB RAM will more than likely not be enough, so we highly recommend 64MB or more. Please also check Apple's documentation yourself and make sure you adhere to the requirements for virtual memory settings,
As of 10/2001 this version of MRJ is available for download
from Apple's web site at:
http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html
This is minimum level of MRJ that fixes the problem with cell selection found in earlier versions.
Apple lists the requirements to run this version as "PowerPC, MacOS 7.6.1 or later, minimum 32 Mb RAM". It is our experience that 32Mb RAM will more than likely not be enough, so we highly recommend 48Mb or more. Please also check Apple's documentation yourself and make sure you adhere to the requirements for virtual memory settings. If your computer does not have enough memory to support the recommended MRJ V2.2.4, use this version.
Apple makes the older versions of software available at the
Apple Developer Ftp site. MRJ V2.1.4 is available there at the
following location:
ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/java
MeasureJ2X V2.6.6. was distributed with MRJ V2.1.0 .
Installations of MeasureJ2X using this version of MRJ should
upgrade to MRJ 2.1.4 or greater. The MRJ V2.1.0 has problems with
cell selection when deleting measurements that are fixed with the
later versions of MRJ.
If you have questions or find a version of MRJ at the Apple Web site that isn't described, please feel free to contact us at projectj2x@voortech.com
MeasureJ2X has been developed under ProjectJ2X, through support from the Dendroecological community. It is software that will exist only through continued support from the community. Please feel a part of the process and make comments and suggestions on any aspect of the MeasureJ2X program or ProjectJ2X. We want to hear from you!
Enjoy the measuring program.
