File Save Errors
You receive an error similar to the following when trying to save measurements (ie when using the File, Save (As) menu item):

Caused by Multilingual Settings
The most common cause of this error is running Windows with a multilingual pack installed, or with certain multilingual settings. The problem is easily fixed either by changing the multilingual settings under Windows or by downloading a version of MeasureJ2X that provides a workaround to the problem. These solutions will be needed until multilingual support is added to MeasureJ2X (hopefully soon!).

Symptom of Multilingual Settings Problem
The problem is caused when a language that has a 'comma' as a separator for numbers is used as the language for 'non-Unicode' programs (MeasureJ2X is considered a non-Unicode program by the Windows operating system). This setting is used to show menus in the language of choice. The symptom that the multilingual settings are causing the error in saving files is that a comma (&sbquo;) shows up as a separator in the measuring window:

Solutions
Change the Windows Language Settings
The problem can be fixed by changing the 'Regional Language Settings' in Windows:

# Windows XP - Use Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Advanced Tab. Under 'Select a language for non-Unicode programs....', select English(United States), or any language that uses a '.' for the decimal format by default.
# Windows 7 - Use Control Panel, Clock, Language, and Region, Region and Language, Administrative, Change system locale, English

Download MeasureJ2X V5.0
The problem has been fixed in MeasureJ2X V5.0 (released January, 2014). If you are running MeausureJ2X V4.2 or earlier(use the Help, About menu item to check your version) download and install V5.0.

The latest version is available to subscribers and requires using your user name and password for downloading and your registration key to register once installed. It is recommended you first confirm the problem can be solved by changing the 'Regional Language Settings' temporarily as described above:

MeasureJ2X V5.0

Confirming the fix
After applying one of the above fixes, the measuring window should display numbers using a decimal points (&#46;) as a separator and successfully save files without reporting errors:

Windows Compatibility
MeasureJ2X will run under Windows 7,8 or 10 32-bit or 64-bit versions. When using a USB-serial adapter with a the 64-bit versions of Windows, 64-bit drivers for the USB-Serial adapter need to be installed. See USB-Serial Adapters for more information.

Regardless of the operating system, MeasureJ2X will run in 32-bit mode, which is enabled by default. If, for some reason, it has been disabled it will be need be enabled.

Windows Logins
If you are installing and running MeasureJ2X in a multiuser Windows environment where a login is required, and want to have the program accessible to multiple users, each logging in with their own logins, MeasureJ2X must be installed and registered using administrative privileges using the following method:

* Right-click on install.exe and select 'run as administrator'. This will run the installer as the administrator.
* Once MeasureJ2X is installed, right-click the 'MeasureJ2X' shortcut that is placed on the desktop and select 'run as administrator' and click on 'register' to enter the registration information and register MeasureJ2X.

After doing this, any user should be able to log in and run MeasureJ2X without being prompted for registration information.

Windows Keyboard Shortcuts
You may wish to turn on conventional Windows keyboard shortcut visibility to allow using shortcut keys in MeasureJ2X to make reading measurements more efficient. In MeasureJ2X V5 and later, the first letter of the 'Read' and 'Zero' buttons will be underlined indicating they can be activated with the conventional Windows 'Alt-r' and 'Alt-z' keyboard shortcuts.

Keyboard shortcut visibility is not on by default. To turn the keyboard shortcut visibility on in Windows 7 and later, open Control Panel / Ease of Access Center / Make the Keyboard easier to use. Near the bottom of the window, turn on the following option: Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys. In Windows XP, open Control Panel / Display. On the 'Appearance' Tab, click on the 'Effects' button, then uncheck the option 'Hide underline letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key.

The MeasureJ2X measuring window should now display with the mnemonics for the keyboard shortcuts on the 'Read' and 'Zero' buttons underlined:

Setup and Installation Issues
This page provides more detail on some of the more common problems with installation and setup.

USB Serial Adapters
Most USB-Serial adapters should be 'plug and play', meaning you plug the adapter in and it works. When it doesn't work, the following is a list of things to do and check:

* Plug the USB-serial adapter in before starting MeasureJ2X.

* Confirm the port the adapter is identifed as

** On a PC, use Device Manager, and look under Ports (COM & LPT) where the adapter should be listed along with its port number (ie COM1). There are several ways to start the Device Manager but one way is to use Start, Run, and type in 'devmgmt.msc', or right-mouse click on 'My Computer' or use 'Control Panel, System'.

** If you are using a KeySpan/Tripplite adapter on a PC, use the 'Keyspan Serial Assistant' to confirm that the adapter is working. The adapter should be listed along with its port number in the Serial Assistant's window.

** If the adapter is not listed, confirm that you have installed the necessary drivers for your operating system by checking at the manufacturer's website.

* Set up MeasureJ2X to use the port the USB-serial adapter is plugged in to by using the Setup, Connection menu item. In the 'Port' dropdown box select the port you have confirmed the adapter is on as shown in the following screenshot:

Not Receiving Measurements
Identifying the port the USB-serial adapter is on (or the serial port you are using directly) and getting MeasureJ2X setup to use that port usually is all that is needed. If you have done that and have tried to measure and are still not receiving measurements, then proceed with the following suggestions.

* Confirm the communcations settings for both the measuring system and the MeasureJ2X program

** Please refer to the Installation Guide Section 4. Measuring System Setup and be sure to follow all 3 steps (cabling, measuring system setup, MeasureJ2X setup).

If you are still not receiving measurements after following the above suggestions you will want to continue with the following:

* Confirm the adapter is working properly

** Please refer to the procedures given in our Installation Guide for testing communication through the adapter.

Data Formats
Default formats
The MeasureJ2X program can read and write data in two formats that are commonly useful: the 'decadal' or 'Tucson' format and the 'csv' or 'spreadsheet' format.

The default format is known as the 'decadal' or 'Tucson' format as documented in Appendix A. of the User Guide. This is a format that is read by many analysis programs that are used after measuring to analyze the measured data.

MeasureJ2X V5.0 and later can also read and write data in a format appropriate for direct import into spreadsheet programs such as Excel. This format is called the 'csv' format (comma separated values) and is commonly used to view and plot the date in the spreadsheet program. The 'csv' format as implemented by MeasureJ2X V5.0 is described in Appendix B. of the User Guide.

Excel ('csv) format for MeasureJ2X V4.2 and earlier
MeasureJ2X V4.2 and earlier can only read and write files in the 'decadal' or 'Tucson' format. In this case, the
the 'YUX' program from the Dendrochronology Program Library (DPL) can be used to convert a file created by MeasureJ2X in the 'decadal' or 'Tucson' format to Excel. The DPL is available for download from the University of Arizona's Tree Ring Lab's website Software page.

A 'decadal' file written by MeasureJ2X that looks like this:

<pre>
test 2003 5100 4700 4300 2090 1650 1210 770
test2 2003 2500 2300 2100 990 770 550 330
test3 2003 2600 2400 2200 1100 880 660 440
test3 2010 220 -9999
</pre>

will look like this after processing with the YUX program:

<pre>
Year	test	test2	test3
2003	5.1	2.5	2.6
2004	4.7	2.3	2.4

Windows Compatibility
MeasureJ2X will run under Windows 7,8 or 10 32-bit or 64-bit versions. When using a USB-serial adapter with a the 64-bit versions of Windows, 64-bit drivers for the USB-Serial adapter need to be installed. See USB-Serial Adapters for more information.

Regardless of the operating system, MeasureJ2X will run in 32-bit mode, which is enabled by default. If, for some reason, it has been disabled it will be need be enabled.

Windows Logins and MeasureJ2X Registration
If you are installing and running MeasureJ2X in a Windows environment where a login is required, and want to have the program accessible to multiple users, each logging in with their own logins, MeasureJ2X must be installed and registered using administrative privileges using the following method:

Windows 7 Enterprise and/or Logins
When installing and running MeasureJ2X in a Windows environment where a login is required, to have the program accessible to multiple logins without requiring each user of the program to register, it must be installed and registered using administrative privileges. It is often not sufficient to install and register using a user account with administrative privileges because Windows 7 has a feature called 'User Account Control' (UAC) which, if enabled, causes all user accounts, including administrative accounts, to run with standard user rights. It is usually enabled in a Windows 7 Enterprise environment.

Thus, in Windows 7 Enterprise environments, or any flavor of Windows7 where UAC is enabled, one must do the following to ensure MeasureJ2X is installed and registered with full administrative rights:

* Right-click on install.exe and select 'run as administrator'. This will run the installer as the administrator.
* Once MeasureJ2X is installed, right-click the 'MeasureJ2X' shortcut that is placed on the desktop and select 'run as administrator' and click on 'register' to enter the registration information and register MeasureJ2X.

* Confirm the adapter and drivers are working

** On a PC, use Device Manager, and look under Ports (COM & LPT)where the adapter should be listed along with its port number. There are several ways to start the Device Manager but one way is to use Start, Run, and type in 'devmgmt.msc', or right-mouse click on 'My Computer' or use 'Control Panel, System'.

** If you are using a KeySpan/Tripplite adapter, use the 'Keyspan Serial Assistant' to confirm that the adapter is working. The 'Keyspan Serial Assistant' is installed with the adapters drivers.

* If its not working, confirm that you have installed the necessary drivers for your operating system by checking at the manufacturer's website.

* Set up MeasureJ2X to use the port the USB-serial adapter is plugged in to by using the Setup, Connection menu item. In the 'Port' dropdown box select the port you have confirmed the adapter is on as shown in the following screenshot:

Mac OS X Maverick (10.9)
Installing or updating to Mac OS X Maverick (10.9) may remove Java from your system, and Java is required to run MeasureJ2X. If this is your case, download and install Apple's Java release .

The history behind this issue is that prior to OS X 10.9, Apple bundled Java with their OS. They developed and maintained Java for the Mac platform up through Java V6. Now development of Java for the Mac is in the hands of Oracle, and it has become unbundled from the OS. Oracle has picked up that task with the release of Java V7 (for Mac OS X). MeasureJ2X has been tested through Java V6 so you need Apple's Java V6 distribution to run the program, and not Oracle's Java V7 distribution. We will test and release a version that is compatible with Java V7 at some point in the future.

<pre>
test 2003 5100 4700 4300 2090 1650 1210 770
test 2010 330 -9999
test2 2003 2500 2300 2100 990 770 550 330
test2 2010 110 -9999
test3 2003 2600 2400 2200 1100 880 660 440
test3 2010 220 -9999
</pre>

will look like this after processing with the YUX program:

<pre>
Year	test	test2	test3
2003	5.1	2.5	2.6
2004	4.7	2.3	2.4
2005	4.3	2.1	2.2
2006	2.09	0.99	1.1
2007	1.65	0.77	0.88
2008	1.21	0.55	0.66
2009	0.77	0.33	0.44
2010	0.33	0.11	0.22
</pre>
